Effective treatment options for fungal nail infections in Edgware

A fungal nail or skin infection can be unsightly and knock your confidence. Fungal infections on your feet can appear on the skin, where it is known as Athlete’s Foot, or within the toenails. If left untreated, fungal skin infections can progress and begin to affect your toenails too. Therefore, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible.

What does a fungal nail infection look like?

The most common place for a fungal infection to appear on the skin is in between the toes, but it can also appear anywhere on the soles of your feet. You may have a mild rash-like lesion or more severe pus-filled lesions, which are also extremely painful. When a fungal nail infection is present, the nail becomes thicker, discoloured, and crumbly, with visible colour changes.

At Podiatry Station, we are the only local podiatry and chiropody clinic offering 5 minute fungal nail tests, designed to help identify the best course of treatment for your individual case.

Frequently asked questions

Fungal nail infections, also known as onychomycosis, often present with symptoms such as thickening of the nails, discoloration (yellow or brown), brittleness, and distorted nail shape. In some cases, there may be pain or discomfort. If you suspect a fungal nail infection, it’s advisable to consult with a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis.

Treatment for fungal nail infections may include topical antifungal medications, oral antifungal drugs, or a combination of both. Over-the-counter (OTC) antifungal creams or nail lacquers can be effective for mild cases, but more severe infections may require prescription-strength medications. Consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended to determine the most suitable treatment based on the severity of the infection.

The duration of treatment varies, and complete resolution of a fungal nail infection can take up to eighteen months. Patience is key, as nails grow slowly. Recurrence is possible, especially if preventive measures, such as maintaining good foot hygiene and avoiding shared footwear, are not followed. It’s important to complete the full course of prescribed medication and follow the healthcare provider’s instructions to reduce the risk of recurrence.

While some people may try natural remedies like tea tree oil or vinegar soaks, their effectiveness varies. There is no scientific research to back up the many claims that natural remedies can clear up fungal nails. Therefore, at Podiatry Station we do not endorse or encourage the use of these topical applications.
