What is Swift Fungal Nail Treatment?

Swift uses a specially designed probe to deliver microwave energy directly to the infected nail plate. The energy heats the water content in the tissue, disrupting and killing fungal organisms deep within the nail while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

This technology is gaining popularity thanks to its efficacy and minimal invasiveness, with treatments completed in a short, simple session, and no need for dressings or long recovery times.

Who Can Benefit from Swift Fungal Nail Treatment?

If you have a persistent fungal nail infection, Swift may be a highly effective option,  particularly when:

  • Oral antifungal medications are not suitable
  • Previous treatments have failed or been ineffective
  • You prefer a non-drug, clinic-based approach

However, there are some circumstances where Swift may not be recommended:

  • Uncontrolled diabetes or peripheral vascular disease
  • Immune suppression
  • Pregnancy
  • Metal implants in the foot (pins / plates)
  • Low pain threshold

If you’re unsure whether Swift is right for you, we’ll assess your eligibility during an initial consultation.

How Swift Treatment Works

  • Assessment & Planning

At your first appointment, we will evaluate the extent of the fungal infection, trim and debride the nail as needed, and explain how the treatment works.

  • Treatment Session

A specialist applies the Swift probe to your nail and administers controlled microwave energy. You will feel a short, sharp sensation, but the treatment is over within seconds.

  • Immune Response Activation

The applied heat stimulates your immune system, helping your body to gradually replace the infected nail with healthy new growth.

  • Follow-Up Treatments

Typically, three sessions are required. These are usually spaced two weeks apart, depending on your response.

What to Expect During and After Treatment

  • The treatment appointment usually lasts around 30 minutes.
  • No dressings are required afterward — you can go back to your normal activities right away.
  • We may recommend a topical antifungal to support the treatment and help prevent reinfection.
  • Over time, as your nail grows, you’ll see healthy new nail replacing the damaged, infected part.

Our Swift treatment results

Over a series of treatments, many patients see a significant reduction in infection and new healthy nail growth. While every case is different, Swift provides a promising route to long-term fungal nail clearance.

Frequently asked questions

During the procedure, you may feel a sharp, brief heat — often described like a “pinprick” or injection. It subsides quickly.

Most patients need three sessions, though this could vary based on the severity of the infection and how well you respond.

Swift isn’t recommended for people with uncontrolled diabetes, certain implants, or suppressed immune systems. We’ll assess this during your consultation.

Immediately after treatment, your nail will look the same. Over the weeks that follow, healthy nail should begin to grow through as the fungal tissue clears.
