Nail Surgery

What is toenail surgery?

Toenail surgery is a minor surgical procedure, carried out under local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort. It is a relatively short and straightforward operation, performed in our clean and comfortable clinic.

Ingrown toenail surgery usually involves removing a part of your toenail to eliminate pain or infection, but in some cases the whole nail may need to be taken off. We may use a range of different techniques during your surgery to get the best result depending on your clinical need. At Podiatry Station, we offer modern treatment options including laser therapy to promote faster healing and less downtime. Please ask a member of the team for more information.

What does toenail surgery involve?

  • Consultation and planning

Before your nail surgery, we see you for a comprehensive consultation. We ask you about your symptoms and examine your toe to aid our diagnosis and planning for your surgical procedure. We explain the treatment to you in detail and give you the chance to ask any questions.

  • Careful and effective surgery

On the day of your surgery, we make sure you are feeling relaxed and comfortable before numbing the affected toe with local anaesthetic. We then remove all or part of your ingrown toenail, using the most suitable technique for your case. If your nail is completely removed, or this is a recurring problem, we apply a chemical called phenol to ensure the nail does not grow back.

  • Aftercare

Our podiatrist will apply a large bulky dressing on your toe after your surgery which stays on until your first follow up appointment. You will be able to go home the same day as your operation, returning the next day for a follow-up appointment. We give you bespoke advice about how to care for your toe, including the best way to redress it daily and minimise the chances of post-operative issues.

Frequently asked questions

Ingrown toenail surgery is not painful, as we use local anaesthetic to numb your toe for the duration of the procedure. The numbness lasts for several hours to ensure that you sit comfortably through the procedure and have time to get home and put your feet up to rest. When this wears off, you may experience some discomfort, but this can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers, as advised by your podiatrist.

We recommend you take two days off work for your toenail surgery – one for the surgery itself and the next day for your follow-up appointment so we can check that everything has gone well. Your nail surgery will take around an hour in total, but you will need to go home and rest afterwards. You will not be able to wear outdoor shoes until you have seen us for your follow-up appointment, as the dressing on your toe will be very thick and bulky.

We strive to offer you the earliest available appointment for your toenail surgery, as we understand how painful an ingrown toenail can be and want to help. We can also provide emergency appointments for a surcharge, subject to availability.

Ingrown toenails occur when the corner or side of your nail grows into the soft flesh of your toe. Your toe may become red, painful and swollen, and you may notice your toenail curving into your toe. Ingrown toenails are most commonly found on the big toe, but they can happen on any of your toes.

The best ways to help prevent an ingrown toenail are:

  • Don’t cut your toenails too short or with a large curve
  • Don’t wear shoes that are too tight or ill-fitting
  • Keep your feet clean and make sure you dry them thoroughly
  • Make sure you cut straight across your nail
