Dry Skin & Cracked Heels

Why do I have dry skin and cracked heels?

The skin on the soles of your feet undergo immense pressure because they are responsible for holding your entire body weight during the gait (walking) cycle. The skin needs to be looked after on a daily basis and if it is neglected then it can deteriorate very quickly. The good news is that because your skin is renewing itself every day, with the correct treatment, improvement can be seen very quickly.

What does the treatment involve?

Initially, your podiatrist will look at your skin and come up with a tailored treatment plan for you. This often includes removing the dead dry skin and applying a hydrating balm to keep your feet soft. This may be a one-off treatment where you wish to have your feet ‘tidied up’. Alternatively, if you wish to keep your skin in the best possible condition and avoid future problems, we can see you as an ongoing treatment.

Many patients fear that the removal of hard skin will be painful. Rest assured that you are coming to a clinic where our podiatrists have many years of experience using a scalpel and can carry out this procedure without the need for any anaesthetic or pain relief. Some patients suffer from extremely ticklish feet, which may just mean that they laugh their way through their treatment!
