Paediatric Podiatry (Kids’ Feet)

Why should my child see a podiatrist?

Children’s feet are constantly growing, with ligaments and soft muscles that can be easily manipulated and deformed. If you notice an issue with the way your child is walking or carrying out their normal daily activities, it is best to get them checked out by a specialist podiatrist.

At Podiatry Station, we are highly trained and experienced in caring for children’s feet, and provide personalised treatment. We understand you may be looking for reassurance that your child is developing correctly, and we are happy to answer any of your questions to alleviate any stress or anxiety.

What do podiatry treatments for children involve?

  • Assessment and diagnosis

At their first appointment, we assess your child’s feet and explain the best course of treatment. If you are unsure what the issue is, we examine from the hip down to identify the problem and potential causes. We let you and your child know what is happening at every stage, and make sure there are lots of opportunities for you to ask any questions you may have. Our treatment and care will vary depending on the issue at hand.

  • Ingrown toenails

Ingrown toenails are common in children and can cause pain and discomfort. If your child has an ingrown toenail, it is important to see us as soon as possible so we can provide conservative treatment before it has the chance to get any worse. We use filing and dressing techniques to manage the ingrown nail and try to avoid the need for nail surgery. In some cases, a minor surgical procedure is required, but rest assured that we have extensive experience in the successful treatment of ingrown nails in children.

    Verrucas and warts

A verruca is a viral infection that commonly affects children’s feet. They can be easily picked up in communal areas such as swimming pools, gym mats and school changing rooms, and can multiply and spread very quickly on your child’s feet. At Podiatry Station, we offer several treatment options for verrucas, including the revolutionary Swift microwave therapy, which is safe, predictable and quick. Your child’s verruca will be eliminated and any pain and discomfort gone.

  • Foot pain

If your child is complaining of foot pain, we are happy to see them to identify any issue and provide effective treatment. Often, foot pain in a growing child is part of the normal development process, but we understand you may prefer some reassurance of this. If a more in-depth assessment is required, we examine your child from the hips down, helping us to identify the source of the problem and form a bespoke treatment plan to correct it. Often, this involves a stretching and strengthening exercise programme, footwear advice and insoles.

Frequently asked questions

To avoid damaging developing feet, younger children should only wear shoes once they are learning to walk. Avoid forcing their feet into tight shoes before this, as it could cause an issue that needs specialist treatment to correct.

If your child is complaining of pain or discomfort in their feet, or you notice that they are struggling to participate in their usual sporting events or daily activities, please make an appointment with the podiatrist. We will assess your child, work out the issue and provide tailored treatment.
