Diabetic Assessments

Why is a diabetic foot assessment important?

Being diagnosed with diabetes can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! You can take control of your condition with careful management, and foot health is an important part of this. Excess sugar in your bloodstream can reduce the blood flow in your arteries, a risk factor for strokes and high blood pressure. It can also cause damage to the nerves in your feet, resulting in loss of feeling and injuries such as cuts and blisters going unnoticed and developing into more complex problems.

With a diabetic foot assessment, we aim to eliminate the chances of you developing lower limb and foot problems as a result of your diabetes. A diabetic foot assessment looks at the blood and nerve supply to your feet, and the treatment we provide is tailored to prevent the onset of complications rather than waiting for them to arise.

What does a diabetic assessment involve?

We offer two levels of assessments at Podiatry Station. The first assessment is a consultation, and vascular and neurological assessment. The second assessment includes everything from the first level but also has an added analysis of pressure points using Footscan to predict future areas of breakdown.

    Initial consultation

During your diabetic foot assessment, we assess two key areas to determine which risk category you fall into and to ensure our ongoing treatment is completely tailored to your needs. To begin, we ask you a little about your diabetes and overall health, if you are experiencing any issues with your feet, and give you the chance to ask any questions.

  • Blood supply assessment

During our vascular assessment, we check the blood flow to your feet using a Doppler, making sure there are no issues present. The Doppler allows us to hear the blood pumping through your blood vessels. This procedure is painless and involves no needles or injections.

  • Nerve assessment

During the nerve assessment, we use specialist instruments to check the feeling in your feet. We brush a monofilament (a small strand of nylon) over your foot and ask you to tell us when you can feel this. We also use a tuning fork to assess how well you can feel vibrations in your feet. Both tests are completely painless and do not take long.

  • Pressure Points

Using our Phits Footscan, we can now predict what areas of your feet may be more prone to breakdown in the future. This information is priceless as it allows us to make changes before the problem arises in the first place.

    Detailed report

At the end of your diabetic foot assessment, we will have compiled a detailed report about your foot health with recommendations for treatment. This can be made available for you to give to your GP or have for your own records. We also give you a bespoke treatment plan for your ongoing foot care at our clean and modern clinic.

Frequently asked questions

We recommend that diabetic patients have their feet treated by a podiatrist every 6-8 weeks. Your regular appointment will include cutting your nails, removing hard skin and corns and doing a visual inspection for any problems. The benefit of regular care is that you will not be required to do much except moisturise your feet in between appointments.

People with diabetes need to take greater care of their feet as they have an increased chance of infection and complications from wounds and other problems. Excess blood sugar caused by diabetes can affect the blood supply and nerves in the feet, causing potential problems. Regular foot care enables those with diabetes to take control of their condition, addressing risk factors and preventing the onset of many issues.

We recommend that you have a diabetic foot assessment once a year, to enable us to check your feet are remaining healthy and problem-free, and give you tailored recommendations and advice for your foot care at home or in the clinic.

If you are diabetic, it is very important that you make sure the clinic you choose for your foot assessment is clean. You have a greater chance of picking up an infection if proper cleanliness protocols are not followed. At Podiatry Station, we pride ourselves on keeping our clinic exceptionally clean, creating the perfect environment to care for your feet.
