Your questions, answered

An ingrown toenail is not usually serious, unless you have an existing condition such as diabetes, poor circulation or a reduced immune system. However, if left untreated, infection can develop in the rest of the toe and foot, and in very rare cases could get into the bloodstream. The quicker you deal with it, the less painful the treatment will be.
It’s advisable to seek professional help if the ingrown toenail is causing severe pain, signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus), or if there is a persistent issue despite home remedies. People with diabetes or circulatory problems should see a podiatrist promptly to avoid complications. Podiatrists can provide appropriate treatment, including nail trimming, antibiotics for infection, or, in severe cases, a minor surgical procedure to remove part of the nail.
The duration of treatment varies based on the size, location, and type of verruca or wart. As the treatment is dependent on how well your immune system reacts to it, no fixed time can be given. We are happy to give you an estimate on how long your treatment may take but, unfortunately nothing is guaranteed. Even with successful treatment, recurrences are possible. It’s important to follow the prescribed treatment plan and consult with a podiatrist if the condition persists or worsens.
Treatment for fungal nail infections may include topical antifungal medications, oral antifungal drugs, or a combination of both. Over-the-counter (OTC) antifungal creams or nail lacquers can be effective for mild cases, but more severe infections may require prescription-strength medications. A consultation with a podiatrist is recommended to determine the most suitable treatment based on the severity of the infection.
